Omar Burton Wright Jr. Obituary
December 12, 2016 Omar Burton Wright, Jr. (Burt) of Los Angeles died on December 12, 2016, at the age of 90 years old after a healthy and active life. Burt was born in Belvidere, Illinois, a small town outside of Chicago, where his ancestors had lived for generations, active in commerce and civic affairs. In 1944, at age seventeen, Burt volunteered for the United States Navy and served as an Electronic Technician's Mate. He was on active duty at Treasure Island, San Francisco during VJ Day and later stationed on the USS Albany. After the war, Burt received his BS in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and his MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Burt made his career in management consulting, specializing in transportation and finance and contributing to numerous rapid-transit projects in Los Angeles and throughout California. Later, he was a Director at Coopers & Lybrand. Burt married Helen Catherine (Kay) O'Connor in 1958 in Chicago. After beginning married life in Brooklyn Heights, New York, they moved the family to Los Angeles in 1966. They had four children, who attended Cheremoya Elementary School, Harvard School, and Marlborough School. Burt was widowed in 1982 and later resided in the family's Hollywood Hills home for over forty years. Burt was an avid reader and a man of many interests. He was an active member of the Mayflower Society and wrote a book on family history. A lifelong member of the downtown Los Angeles Athletic Club, he exercised regularly. He also enjoyed a full social life with Leah Coulter, his companion of many years, with whom he shared extensive theater and travel. Burt was committed to community and charity work. He was active in school parent associations and scouting. He served as President of the Board of Directors of the Hollygrove Children's Home. He also volunteered for over thirteen years for the Los Angeles Public Library Adult Literacy Program, where he was still tutoring regularly at age ninety. Burt was a man of culture and keen intellect yet always modest and affable. He was admired by many. Burt is survived by all four of his children, Christopher O.B. Wright, Brian J. Wright, Catherine H. Wright, and George W. Wright. He is also survived by his niece Mary Pickert of Los Angeles, three adult granddaughters, and other relatives in Illinois. He is preceded in death by his wife Kay, sister Katherine Pickert, and nephew Gregory Pickert. Burt's family thanks the nursing and medical staff of UCLA Neurology, Cedars-Sinai Acute Rehab and Supportive Care Medicine, The Rehabilitation Centre of Beverly Hills, and Seasons Hospice who all cared for Burt so compassionately during his final months following a stroke. Funeral services will be held at Our Mother of Good Counsel Catholic Church at 2060 N Vermont in Los Angeles on December 22, 2016, at 11 am. Burial will be in the family plot in Belvidere, Illinois.
