Otto H. Johanson Obituary
July 12, 1916 - April 15, 2017 Otto Johanson died April 15, 2017 in his home in Tujunga, California. He was 100 years old. Born in Finland's Aland Islands, Otto went to sea on a three masted merchant schooner at the age of 15. He worked as a sailor on freighters throughout the 1930s. He immigrated to the US in 1939, and was drafted into the US Army in 1941. He served in the Pacific Theater as a combat engineer in the 27th Infantry Division from 1942-1945, and saw action in the Eastern Mandates, Ryukyu Islands and Western Pacific campaigns. He became a US citizen while serving in the Army. After the war, he moved to Los Angeles and worked as a carpenter. He married Bertha Monroe in 1948, built a house in Tujunga in 1954 and raised a family. Otto enjoyed an active retirement, traveling and fishing and helping others. Otto was preceded in death by his wife Bertha and is survived by sons Edward Johanson and Gary Johanson (Rochelle), daughter Eileen Stafford, grandson Benjamin Stafford (Norma), great-grandson James Stafford and sister Ruth Karlsson. Visitation and the Service will be conducted at Utter McKinley San Fernando Mission Mortuary, 11071 Columbus Ave., Mission Hills, CA. Visitation is from 5 to 8:30 pm on Wednesday, April 19 and the Service is at 11 am on Thursday, April 20, followed by burial at San Fernando Mission Cemetery.
