1924 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
Patricia Elise Melniker Obituary
April 7, 1924 - December 8, 2016 My mother's life ended in her home in Los Angeles on December 8, 2016, at the age of 92, due to pancreatic cancer. She had an influential, fulfilling, remarkable, and at times, grievous life. Influential in the sense that over her 62 years as an educator she had a beneficial effect on her thousands of students and co-workers. Fulfilling in the sense that she traveled to six continents and most of our National Parks. She was a lover of many genres of music and was constantly attending concerts and operas with her large network of friends. Grievous in that she survived the loss of her husband, father of her three children, Harold, in 1978, her son, James, in 1980, and her daughter, Kathryn, in 2005. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on April 7, 1924 and was raised in Kansas City, Missouri to the age of ten. Her family relocated to California in 1934 and soon moved to Malibu. She attended Santa Monica High School, graduating in 1941, and the University of Redlands, graduating in 1944. She taught third through sixth grades in the Santa Monica Unified School District for five years. After her children reached school age she returned to teaching at El Rodeo School in the Beverly Hills Unified School District in 1959. For several years she taught all subjects at the sixth grade level and then spent the remainder of her career teaching seventh and eighth grade mathematics. Retiring in 1988 she continued a vigorous schedule of substitute teaching, tutoring and mentoring students, and volunteer work at El Rodeo until just a few weeks ago. She loved to travel. She spent several weeks during many summers hiking through the many various and always spectacular terrains of Switzerland. Also among her favorite destinations were the Greek Islands and the England Cotswolds. She had a special love for Yosemite, leading many school senior class trips. Even after her diagnosis she went to Croatia, swimming in the Adriatic Sea, this summer with her friend, Rita, and to the Utah National Parks with her son in October. She is survived by her son, Richard, daughter-in-law, Rachel, granddaughter, Rebeca, grandson-in-law, Raul Lopez, and Raul's wonderful family. Donations may be made in her name to the Sierra Club. There will be no services. [email protected]
