Patrick Daniel Cotter Obituary
Patrick Daniel Cotter lost his long and courageous battle with cancer on May 17, 2016. He was 65. Patrick (Pat) is survived by his beloved wife Lupe, his daughter Melody, and his five grandchildren: Celeste, Diego, Biancka, Francis and Liam. Pat's 3 brothers, Mike Cotter, Rich Cotter and Tim Cotter, and his 4 sisters, Mary Cotter-Wells, Bridget Johnston, Eileen Cotter Howell and Kathleen Burnside, their spouses, children and grandchildren, as well as a large extended family in California and other states, Ireland, Mexico and Australia, all mourn his passing. His mother Molly, father Peter, and brother Peter preceded Pat in death. Pat's parents emigrated from Ireland shortly before Pat was born. Pat was the fifth of 9 children and the first born in America. He grew up in Paramount, CA, moving to Santa Barbara with his family when he was 19. He spent many hours hiking in the hills above Santa Barbara and exploring the wonders of the ocean and beaches, developing a strong interest in the geology of the area. As a young man he worked as a park ranger in the North County of Santa Barbara. His love of nature was a life-long passion. Pat loved to travel. After his college graduation he struck out on a 6-month driving trip around the country, later adding Hawaii, and was proud to say that he had visited all 50 states. When he was 14 he traveled to Ireland with his family. In later years Pat and Lupe traveled around Oregon and they found special peace watching the waves from any vantage point along the Oregon coast. Pat cherished time at home and on the road with his immediate family and was a nurturing grandfather to his 5 grandchildren. After receiving his BA from CSULB and managing a lumber company for several years, Pat began his career in real estate, first in Southern California and later in Salem, OR, where he and Lupe moved in 1990. He worked for Kennedy Real Estate in West Salem, later purchasing the company and growing it into the thriving, full service real estate company it is today, John L. Scott in West Salem. Pat built and maintained many life-long friendships through his work. He loved his chosen career, which spanned over 40 years. Patrick Cotter will be interred on May 27, 2016 in Calvary Cemetery in Santa Barbara, CA. There will be a viewing at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service in Salem, OR on Sunday, May 22 from 12-4 pm. There will be a Memorial Celebration of Life later in Salem, OR, the date and place to be announced. In lieu of flowers, Pat's family asks that you consider a donation to help fund further research on head and neck cancer.
