Born in Springfield, Illinois, to Chester and Mary Ellen Long, he was raised in Phoenix, Arizona, from the age of 12. He attended Brophy College Preparatory, an all-male Jesuit high school in Phoenix, where he was a multi-sport athlete. In 1960 he was selected to the All State Arizona high school football team. While maintaining full time employment with Aetna, Pat enrolled in the evening law school program at Southwestern School of Law, where he graduated in 1970. Pat's law career began as an Associate, with Veatch Carlson Dorsey and Quimbly (1971-75). He then worked and became an Equity Partner at Chase Rotchford Drukker & Bogust (1975-89). Pat's love of the law resulted in his monumental contributions to the legal community. He was a past President of multiple regional and national law organizations, including the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel (1991) and Defense Research Institute (2006). He served as both the Editor and Columnist of Verdict Magazine for 15 years (1993-2008), and continued in his capacity as the magazine's chief Columnist, until the time of his passing. He was a Faculty Member of both the ABOTA Masters in Trial and IADC Trial Academy programs. His was selected as a "Super Lawyer" by Los Angeles Magazine for 11 consecutive years. Despite his busy professional life, Pat found time to pursue his many other passions including literature, music, movies, writing, flying airplanes, and riding motorcycles. His love of athletics inspired him to continue playing lacrosse, rugby, and ice hockey well into adulthood. He was a devout Catholic and proud Irishman.
