1918 - 2015 Obituary Condolences
Paul Gerard Johansing passed away peacefully on June 5th at his home in Solana Beach, CA, surrounded by family. Paul was born to Harry and Millie Johansing on April 30, 1918, in Long Beach, CA. He was raised in Flintridge, CA, attended St. Elizabeth School in Pasadena, and Loyola High School before graduating from the University of Southern California in 1940, where he was a member of the Newman Club. He married his sweetheart, Bette Northrop, August 10, 1940, at Santa Barbara Mission, before serving in the Navy. After his discharge, he became a salesman for the California steel industry until he was invited to join his Dad and his brother, Harry, at Cass & Johansing Insurance Brokers in Los Angeles, where he developed and flourished as a much respected leader and insurance businessman and philanthropist for more than sixty years. Paul and Bette, husband and wife, shared their love and support for each other for nearly seventy-five-years. They cherished their many self-guided road trips together throughout the Pacific Northwest. Paul leaves wonderful memories with his children, including quarterbacking neighborhood football games, trips to the zoo and observatory, road trips to Northern California, the Grand Canyon, Durango, CO, trout and deep sea fishing trips from San Diego to Monterey, and summers at the beach. He also enjoyed his memberships in the Lake Arrowhead Yacht Club, Chaparral Club, Annandale Golf Club, the California Club, the Jonathan Club, the Valley Hunt Club, and Ocean Hills Fishing Club. Paul believed in the power of prayer and treasured his Catholic faith. He is respectfully remembered for his devoted service to various non-profit boards and charities, including Junipero Serra Boy's Club, Serra Club, Cardinal's (McIntyre) Coordinating Committee, Executive Board of LA Council of BSA, United Way, Arthritis Foundation, Angel's Flight Youth Center, Catholic Youth Organization, Catholic Charities, past president Maryvale Auxiliary Board. He was an honoree of the Juvenum Amicus Award, Catholic Youth Organization Man of the Year, and was knighted as Knight Commander of St. Gregory. He also served on various insurance company's agent councils, The Los Angeles Insurance Brokers Society and Downtown Businessmen's Association. Paul is survived by his loving wife, Bette, his children Pamela Johansing Pitts, Paul G. Johansing, Jr, "Gere" (Xiaodan Ke), Tony (Cathy), Tina, Kim Talbot (Mark), Tracy and Christopher "Duffy." Paul also leaves twenty-six grand-children, twenty-one great grand-children, one great great-grandchild, and his sister Barbara Buckley. He was predeceased by his children Drew and Gretchen. Paul's funeral Mass will be at Mission San Luis Rey, 4050 Mission Avenue, Oceanside, CA, on Wednesday, June 17th at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, you may send a donation in Paul's name to the Mission San Luis Rey, St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Oceanside or the .
