October 31, 1918 - December 10, 2017 Paul was born in San Francisco, California to Terrence and Rose O'Brien. He was the youngest of three with two older brothers, Terrence and Gerald. Paul was an athletic youth and had an early career in semi-pro baseball in Oakland, California. He attended San Francisco Business School and when Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1942, Paul enlisted in the US Army. He was selected for Officer Training and rose to First Lieutenant on General Patton's staff. He was stationed in North Africa and served for five years. After the war, Paul moved to Southern California and began a career in mortgage banking with Winter Mortgage Company. His career expanded to becoming an Officer of Security Pacific Bank, rising to Senior Vice President. Paul's knowledge of real estate, economics and finance led to his being on the Board of Directors of a multitude of Institutions. He served as Director of California Mortgage Banker's Association, Northwest Mutual Life R.E.I.T., The National Council of Housing Partnerships, Pioneer Savings and Loan, Del Webb Sun City, Meade Housing and the Lusk Company. Additionally, Paul became President of the American Banker's Association of Real Estate and a Trustee of the Orange County Retirement Trust. He enjoyed mentoring young people in their financial career paths and provided meaningful financial advice to friends and family until his death. In his early 90's Paul began a private online stock investment portfolio to better manage his own investment portfolio. Paul was married to his wife Bette for 64 years and they raised two children. Timothy Sean O'Brien and Lori Colleen O'Brien in Arcadia, California. He loved to travel with his wife and friends and was an avid reader of sea stories, crime fiction and finance and economics periodicals. Paul was also a passionate golfer and played regularly into his late 80's. He hit the links around the world and was a member of a variety of Southern California Clubs throughout his life including Annandale Country Club, Sunrise Country Club, El Dorado Country Club, Sherwood Country Club, El Niguel Country Club, Marrakesh Country Club and the Jonathan Club. Paul remained a devoted baseball fan and followed the LA Dodgers all the way through their World Series run this year. He was also highly identified with his Irish heritage and never missed his Notre Dame football games on the weekends. For those who knew Paul, they were welcomed with warmth and good friendship. He was a devoted father, husband and friend and always made time to listen and offer help to others. Paul contributed charitably to the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles and Orange County and founded a scholarship fund at Chapman College. He passed away on December 10, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. He is survived by his wife Bette and his daughter, Lori. He was predeceased by his son, Tim. Memorial services are private.
