Paula Connolly Galbraith Obituary
February 1, 1920 - June 6, 2017 Paula Connolly Galbraith at age 97, died peacefully in Pasadena, California. She was born in Los Angeles to Lillian and Paul Lowry. Her father held many roles with the Los Angeles Times covering a variety of sports through the years. As Automobile Editor, he took the family on weekend excursions in brand-new cars all over California. This was likely the beginning of her thirst for travel. Paula attended Occidental College and graduated from UC Berkeley. On the day after Pearl Harbor, John Joseph (Jack) Connolly, Jr. slipped an engagement ring on her finger during church. She skipped commencement ceremonies to marry him on May 16, 1942 in San Francisco. The young family of three moved to Pasadena after the war and soon, they had two more children and the family of five was complete. Paula did not drive until 1959 but once she had wheels, she became an active community volunteer. She served as President of the St. Bede's Parish Council of Women, as a docent for The Gamble House, a volunteer at The Green House and was always involved in her children's schools. An avid social bridge player, she belonged to several groups through the years, but the original Bridge Club, formed by neighbors who lived within walking distance, existed for more than 50 years. Paula and Jack traveled the world with that group once the children went off to college and until Jack died in 1983 at the young age of 63. When grandchildren began to arrive, she became known as Polly and treasured that name. Paula considered herself lucky to have had two happy marriages. During one of her trips abroad, she met a friend's British cousin for lunch and, in 1988, she married Eric Galbraith in London, England. They maintained homes in both countries for 25 years. Eric loved the opportunity to golf year-round and Paula loved exploring England as an insider. They often said they were "always on holiday". Eric died in London in 2014 at 101. Paula had a unique ability to make and maintain friends of all ages. She was truly interested in her friends' families and nurtured those friendships throughout her life. In addition to her parents and her husbands, Paula was pre-deceased by her brothers Gordon Kibbee and Biff Lowry and her grandson, Steven Kemp. She is survived by her children, Paula Connolly Kemp (Malcom), Joe Connolly (Cindy), and Alyse Connolly Sparks (Bill). Also 10 grandchildren: Brian Kemp (Gail), Sarah Kemp Young (Russell), Brendan Connolly (Jenni), Peter Connolly (Mary), Jay Connolly, Andrew Sparks (Jan), Emily Sparks Martin (Kyle), Evan Sparks (Katie), Devon Mudd Pothier (Jeremy), Trey Holliday (Jenny), and - she was extraordinarily proud to say - 19 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her British family including Anne Galbraith Jones (David), Morag Galbraith Sands and Campbell Galbraith. The family is forever grateful to Paula's long-time assistant Darrell Miller for his many years of devotion. Memorial services are pending. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in her memory to the Paula and Jack Connolly Creative Writing Award, care of Mayfield School, 500 Bellefontaine Street, Pasadena, CA 91105.
