Paula Powers Coe Obituary
December 4, 1936 - September 20, 2016 Dr. Paula Powers Coe was born December 4, 1936 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She died peacefully in Los Angeles, California on September 20, 2016 as the result of a stroke suffered on the last day of August. Paula attended Van Nuys High School and graduated in 1954. She then attended Chouinard Art Institute, from which she graduated with a BFA in 1958. In 1986, Paula chose to pursue her life-long interest in Celtic culture, and enrolled at UCLA in the Folklore and Mythology Department. In 1995 she received her Ph.D., and was president of the Friends & Alumni of Indo-European Studies. One of her dear Chouinard friends introduced Paula to the man who would be her life-long partner, Gene Coe. In 1962, Paula and Gene were wed, a marriage which would continue in love and laughter for 53 years. In 1972, Paula's dream of being a mother was realized when their daughter, Caitlin Coe, was born. In addition to her academic passions, Paula was interested in and excelled at a multitude of creative activities. Paula crocheted, sewed, knit, smocked, and quilted beautiful pieces for family and friends. She loved to cook and to entertain, and her holiday traditions spanned the globe. ?Despite being a life-long Catholic, Paula was a member of a small Hillel group of like-minded scholars who met weekly to examine and discuss the Jewish Torah and biblical history. Holmby Park, Paula's oasis, was where Paula spent every morning, walking with her dog McGuffey and her wonderful friends she met there. Paula is survived by her beloved daughter Caitlin Coe, by her sister Dr. Moira Powers, and by her nephew Noah Pene. Paula was preceded 19 months earlier by the death of her beloved husband, Gene Coe. Donations in Paula's memory may be sent to St. Vincent's Meals on Wheels or Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
