Pauline Polly Plesset Obituary
April 29, 1921 - November 24, 2016 Pauline R. Plesset ("Polly") died peacefully in her home in Solana Beach on November 24, 2016. She was 95 and had lived a full life. In her late eighties, she suffered from dementia, and although not as physically active as she had been, she loved being in her home and enjoyed each day. Polly was born on April 29, 1921 in Denver, CO to Henry and Olga Reideburg and lived there until she relocated to Southern California to attend Scripps College. There, she met and later married Mark M. Mills of Estes Park, CO (attending Caltech) who became a distinguished nuclear physicist. His work brought Polly and their two children to Alamo, CA where she became active in the local school board. In 1958, when Mark was killed in a helicopter crash and awarded the Freedom Medal, Polly returned to Southern California and married her second husband, Ernst H. Plesset. Later they moved to Norther California where she was a Board President of San Mateo Planned Parenthood, strongly believing that freedom of choice was essential to women's equality. Polly worked as a wife, mother, homemaker, caregiver, volunteer and friend and excelled in each of these roles. She connected with people of all walks of life, from janitors to professors to entrepreneurs. She was blessed with a warmth and grit that those around her felt was unique and wonderful. She is missed! She is survived by her son, Mark J. Mills of Bethesda, MD, and her daughter, Ann Mills, also of Solana Beach; as well as by her two step-children, Jean Plesset of Gainesville, FL and Julius L. Plesset of Oregon City, OR. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
