Philip Leon Martin Obituary
June 22, 1929 - March 26, 2016 Philip Leon Martin passed away at his home on March 26, 2016 of natural causes. He was born June 22, 1929 in Santa Ana, CA to Fred and Olga Martin. He was the youngest of four children. He attended Santa Ana High School and upon graduation in 1947, he enlisted in the United States Naval Reserves for 12 years. His successful employment career started at Southern California Edison in 1950 as a trainee in Huntington Beach as a meter reader. His many positions and promotions extended over a 40-year period until his retirement in 1989 as Senior Vice President. Phil was a consummate perfectionist, who put 110% into everything he did, whether it was his professional career, designing things to solve issues around the house, caring for and encouraging his children, or growing roses and orchids in his garden and hot house. He was actively involved in numerous Orange County community, charitable and religious organizations: supporting Saint Joseph Hospital, Children's Hospital of Orange County, La Purisima Catholic Church of Orange, Foundation of the Orange Catholic Diocese, Boy Scouts, United Way and many other organizations. Phil married Jean Lenert in 1953 and was happily married until her death in 1979. Together, they had two children, Karen and Craig. In 1980, Phil married Marguerite (Peggy) Nunn Friend and spent many loving years with her until her death in 2014. Peggy was predeceased by her husband Dr. William Friend where together they had four children; Janet, Kathie, Peggy Ann and Billy. Phil and Peggy loved to travel and spent their retirement years touring the world. Their extensive travels took them to many countries in Asia and Europe where they met and maintained long lasting relationships with other fellow travelers. The stories of their many adventures were never ending, traveling the water ways of Europe, searching out family heritage in England and in Prague, walking the "Great Wall in China", and enjoying the companionship of those they met along the way. Phil is predeceased by his first wife, Jean and second wife, Peggy, both parents, his sisters Irma Jean Ison and Vivian Keightley and brother, Vincent Martin. He is survived by his daughter, Karen Jean Golde (Richard) and his son Craig William Martin (Machelle) ; Peggy's four children; Janet Friend Pauli (Bill), Mary Kathryn (Kathie) Friend Matthews (Eric), Peggy Anne Friend Zimmerman (Wally), and William Charles Friend (Marian). He is also survived by twenty-three grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and six nieces and nephews. Phil's family wishes to thank all of the wonderful medical professionals and the nursing staff of St Joseph's Health & Hospice that have helped make his final days peaceful. A viewing and Rosary service is scheduled for April 7th between 5 and 8 pm at Waverly Chapel, Fairhaven Memorial Park. The Funeral Mass / Service will begin at 11 am on April 8th at La Purisima Catholic Church followed by a graveside service at Fairhaven Memorial Park.
