Phyllis Autotte Obituary
May 5, 1940 - May 2, 2016 Phyllis Ann Autotte was born on May 5, 1940 to Theodore and Adrienne Autotte in Providence, Rhode Island. She was an only child but her parents came from large families so she had many cousins and other relatives. She had a happy childhood in suburban Rhode Island, and loved her beautiful Dalmatian dog named Queenie. She took piano lessons and developed a life-long love of music. She attended Catholic schools and was raised with a deep respect for the religion. When Phyllis graduated from high school in 1957, her family moved to Los Angeles, following the lead of her aunt and uncle, Alfred and Eva Pelote. Phyllis graduated from the Queen of Angels School of Nursing in Los Angeles in 1960, and embarked on a long and distinguished nursing career that focused on providing quality health care to impoverished children. In 1965, Phyllis joined the Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic and moved to New York City, where she cared for and entertained inner-city children, as well as earning an Associate of Arts Degree from Mary Rogers College. From 1968 to 1970, Phyllis lived in San Francisco, where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. Phyllis made her first trip to Peru from 1971 to 1973, where she served and taught in public health clinics, becoming fluent in Spanish. In 1972, she met Dr. Cathy DeAngelis, a Hopkins physician who was to become a dear life-long friend. In 1973, she left Maryknoll and joined Dr. Cathy at the Columbia University medical Center in New York City, where she became a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and also earned a Master's Degree in Public Health. From 1975 to 1978 she was an Instructor at the University of Wisconsin School of Nursing. In 1978, Phyllis became an international pediatric health consultant, employed by the Pan American Health Organization. Her assignments took her to Indonesia, and almost every country in South America, Central America and the Caribbean. Outside of her work during this period, Phyllis traveled extensively, including time spent in Africa, the British Isles, India and Nepal. During the 1980s, Phyllis worked at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and earned a Doctorate (ABT) in Public Health. In the 1990s, after suffering from an autoimmune liver disease, Phyllis retired in rural Pennsylvania in proximity to Dr. Cathy's family. In October 2014, Phyllis moved back to Los Angeles, where she could be with her mother, and be assisted by her cousin Roger Pelote and his wife Gail. Except for her medical problems, Phyllis was very happy and was accommodated with the best health care, loving caregivers, new friends, a frisky cat, high-fidelity music, WiFi and TV options, a grand piano to play, and a beautiful residence. Phyllis passed away on May 2, 2016, as a result of emergency surgery for a perforated intestinal ulcer. She was a kind, jovial, friendly, talented and lovely person, who dedicated her life to helping others in need, and she will be missed by all who knew her. A memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, May 14 at the North Hollywood Church of Religious Science.
