Phyllis Clement Campbell Obituary
March 30, 1925 - July 25, 2017 Phyllis Clement Campbell was born on March 30, 1925 to Frieda and Clarence Clement in Glendale, CA. She graduated from Hoover High in 1943 and from USC in 1947 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. She married her college sweetheart, Gerald Campbell, a month after her graduation. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on July 20, 2017. They were the proud and happy parents of two wonderful children, Janice Elaine Campbell and Jerry Campbell, Jr. In 1954, she founded the Glendale Associated for the Retarded, recently renamed The Campbell Center in honor of her daughter, Janice. After retirement, she and her husband would travel the world. Highlights were walking on the Great Wall of China, seeing the pyramids and Sphinx in Eqypt, walking in the Coliseum in Rome, and walking the Stations of the Cross in Jerusalem. She received many honors for her work to improve the lives of the developmentally disabled; among them the Glendale News Press Woman of Achievement, YWCA Woman of Heart and Excellence, and the Glendale Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year. She was active at the First United Methodist Church of Glendale; volunteering on the cradle roll, teaching in first grade Sunday School, a member of the Collegiate Choir, a member of the Foundation Board, chair of the Pastor Parish Relation Committee, for 13 years a volunteer aide to the then Associate Pastor one day a week, and active in Methodist couples groups with her husband. Survivors include her husband, Jerry Sr., her son, Jerry Jr., and her sister, Ruth Clement Scheppers. Her daughter, Janice, preceded her in death. Internment was at Forest Lawn Glendale. The family requests that any donations in her honor be made to the Campbell Center, 6512 San Fernando Rd., Glendale, 91201 or at www.thecampbell.org.
