Ray Gaio Obituary
Ray Gaio, 78, passed away on May 1, 2017, from esophageal cancer. Ray was born on May 3, 1938, in Springfield, IL. Ray graduated from Cathedral Boys H.S. in Springfield and the University of Notre Dame, where he received a degree in architecture in 1961. Following employment with design firms Leo A. Daly Company, Perkins and Will and Vincent G. Kling, Ray was president and chief executive officer of GAIO, an architectural management consultant firm. In 1990, Ray served as president of the L.A. chapter of AIA (American Institute of Architects). Ray is survived by his life-partner, Eric Nielsen, his sister, Mary Edith Contri, brother Mack, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his heartbroken Collie, Lady. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edith and Americo, his brother, Paul, and his beloved cat, a Maine Coon named Running Bear (RB). Ray's candid "tell it like it is" approach ruffled some feathers yet endured him to many others. He had a quick wit and loved to pontificate. He was resilient--having endured numerous surgeries after a severe automobile accident in 2001. Ray will be remembered by family and friends as a person who really enjoyed life and had a generous spirit. A celebration of Ray's life will be held at the Church of the Recessional, Forest Lawn Glendale, 1712 S. Glendale Ave., on Monday, May 15, 2017, at 9:00 am. Please consider making a donation in Ray's memory to the Pasadena Humane Society, 361 S. Raymond Ave., Pasadena, CA 91105, (626) 792-7151.
