Reginald T. Murphy Obituary
December 29, 2016 Reginald Thomas Murphy was promoted from this world to the next on December 29, 2016, the day of his 65th wedding anniversary to the love of his life, Barbara Ruth Brubaker. His was "an American success story". Born in Cork, Ireland, he immigrated to the US at the age of 2. At Pacific Grove High School, Reg was a standout athlete in football and track, junior class president, and senior commencement speaker. A UCLA grad, career educator and retired USMC Colonel, Reg said later in life, "there is nothing like the Corps". The Marine Corps motto - "Semper Fi" (always faithful), described so well how he lived his life. Most of Reg's career was spent with the Los Angeles Unified School District, as a teacher at Bell High, Dean of Boys Discipline at Jordan High, and Principal at Garfield High. He also served as Assistant Area Superintendent with LAUSD, and used his expertise in labor-management relations as a consultant for major law firms. Reg faithfully served for 50+ years as a board member of the California Credit Union. Reg was an exceptional teacher and mentor to others, who thoroughly enjoyed both the graduate courses he taught at Pepperdine University and UCLA, and the many professional trainings for the Association of California School Administrators. Always the teacher, despite losing the ability to talk or walk in his final years, Reg communicated through a twinkle in his eye, a winning smile, and his always positive "thumbs up". Reg is survived and loved by his children Kathy, Paul, and Tim, their spouses, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. According to his wishes, no public services are planned. Memorials in Reg's honor may be given to The Marine Corps Scholarship Fund or Boys Town USA. "May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand."
