Richard Edwin Unander Obituary
December 28, 1924 - August 9, 2015 Richard Edwin (Dick) Unander, 90, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday morning, August 9, 2015, due to a brain hemorrhage suffered during a fall. Prior to the accident, he was the picture of good health-he was an avid gardener and active in his church, and he had recently finished restoring a WWII Navy N3N primary trainer biplane, which he flew seven times. Unander was born on December 28, 1924, in Burley, Idaho, a small town in the Snake River Valley. He was the fifth and youngest child of Elva Matilda and Ralph Peter Unander. Commander Unander, as Dick was known to friends, joined the Navy immediately following high school and served nobly during and after the war on aircraft carriers deployed around the world. From 1948-1951, Unander served in Finland as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and in 1952, he began a 34-year career as a pilot with United Airlines, based in Los Angeles. That same year, he met the love of his life, Jayne Cosgrave, and after marrying, they spent nights and weekends for more than 25 years flying in a Cessna 310 to cities across the Southwest to teach ballroom dance and cotillion classes for tens of thousands of youth-leaving a legacy of grace, charm, and kindness with everyone they met. Unander is survived by his loving wife and dance partner, Jayne Cosgrave Unander; his sister, Doris Marian Unander, of Salt Lake City, Utah; brother-in-law Donn Chappellet; two sisters-in-law, Luanne Wells and Molly Chappellet; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on August 29 at 3 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 10740 Ohio Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90024.
