Richard M. Grayson Obituary
March 25, 1941 - July 3, 2016 Professor Emeritus of music at Occidental College Dr. Grayson earned his B.A. and Ph.D. in music composition at UCLA and his master's at the University of Chicago. He joined the faculty of Occidental College in 1969 and taught composition and theory until his retirement in 2001. He received a Fulbright Fellowship to Belgium and a composition grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. An internationally known performer, teacher, composer, and recording artist, Dr. Grayson was best known for his remarkable improvisational skills. He participated actively in the Los Angeles contemporary music scene as an accomplished studio musician as well as a performer and Board member at the Monday Evening Concerts. After retiring, he taught at the Crossroads School in Santa Monica, performed around the country, and taught classical and jazz improvisation for Yamaha in Japan (Showa Conservatory), China and Vietnam. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Dr. Susan Grayson; a brother and sister; two nephews; a niece; and two great-nephews.
