Robert E. Richter Obituary
November 29, 1933 - May 29, 2016 Dr. Robert E. Richter of Santa Monica, CA, passed away at age 82 on May 29, 2016. Born in Chicago, IL, Richter graduated in 1950 from Niles Township High School in Chicago and in 1954 from Harvard University, where he excelled in academics and athletics. Like his father, Richter pursued the medical profession, graduating from Northwestern University's School of Medicine in 1959. After completing his internship at Cook County Hospital and residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1966. Lieutenant Commander Richter served a tour in Vietnam, where he ran a surgical hospital in Rach Giá, serving wounded soldiers and the local population. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his service. An orthopedic surgeon specializing in hands, Richter was passionate about his work and greatly respected by his peers and patients across the country. He continued his service to veterans, acting as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Los Angeles. He later started his own 30-year private practice that was associated with St. John's Hospital and Santa Monica Hospital in Santa Monica, CA. Richter had a passion for learning and being outdoors. He enjoyed fishing at his family's cottage in WI, skiing in CO, and golfing in the desert. All who knew him enjoyed his vast repertoire of stories and sense of humor. A much loved father and grandfather, wonderful friend and brother, favorite uncle, avid reader, and dog lover, Richter is survived by his daughter Dominique Plewes and his grandchildren Gavin and Scarlett of Rancho Santa Fe, CA; and his sister and brother-in-law Marian and Jack Bolz of Madison, WI. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to advance cancer research under the direction of Dr. Tim Donahue at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.
