Robert Hale Shelton Obituary
September 30, 1923 - November 30, 2016 My life recently, and peacefully, came to its end after 93 years, 59 as a resident of Corona del Mar. Loving parents provided happy childhood and teen years in La Jolla for me and my two older brothers, enhanced by travel adventures and generous support for our special interests. College education at Pomona was interrupted by WW II. The Navy sent me to Occidental for its V-12 program and I ultimately served in the South Pacific and Occupied Japan. After the war came an internship at the National Institute of Public Affairs in Washington DC, two successful marriages and three generations of multi-talented offspring totaling eleven, so far. My public employment included jobs with federal, state, county, and city governments, including city management for Modesto, Santa Barbara and Newport Beach. Later private employment included senior executive positions (The Irvine Company and others) and a government relations consulting business. Meanwhile, there was elective office (Newport Beach Councilman), membership on the California Transportation Commission, volunteering for civic causes, and recognition as Newport Beach Citizen of the Year (1980). If anything is eternal, it is my gratitude for a good life of rich togetherness with my creative family and the meaningful associations with friends and colleagues at every stage. Is there an afterlife? I'm not telling. There will be a private family farewell. Donations in my name to the Environmental Nature Center or the Newport Bay Conservancy are welcomed.
