Robert Marks Obituary
April 1925 - March 6, 2017 Robert Marks, beloved husband of Barbara Frank Shafer Marks, passed away on March 6, 2017. He was a man of wisdom, honor and great integrity, with a beautiful, optimistic spirit. During World War II Bob served in the Navy as an instructor for naval radar technicians. Born and raised in New York, he settled in Los Angeles after completing military service in 1948. He earned his degree in Structural Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley in 1951. He was a registered civil and structural engineer and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Bob began his own practice, Robert Marks & Associates Structural Engineers, in 1957. Working with many of California's leading architects, he did the structural engineering for homes, schools, churches and all types of commercial buildings. Bob received an award for excellence in the use of steel structure for the Seattle Center Coliseum and an award for outstanding esthetic design in structural steel for a unique modernist home in Los Angeles. In 1968 he became a partner of Architectural License Seminars which prepared architects for their license examinations. For 35 years Bob co-directed ALS and wrote structural engineering study course books that are still widely used today. He also conducted exam preparation seminars for hundreds of students across the country. For engineering students he wrote and published a study course E.I.A. Fundamentals of Engineering. Bob felt deeply about supporting organizations for world peace, saving wildlife, the environment, medical research and people in need throughout the world. He was a good and gentle man--a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. He was a talented writer of humorous short stories. He met illness and injury with the amazing patience, courage and good nature we so loved in him. Without Bob the world has a little less sparkle. A gathering in remembrance of Bob will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 2:00 PM. For details, email [email protected]
