Roger Mark Goodman Obituary
March 12, 1949 - July 12, 2018 Roger Mark Goodman, age 69, died at home in Los Angeles, surrounded by his loving, heartbroken family. Roger was born in Brooklyn, New York, and moved to Los Angeles at 9 months of age. He was fond of saying that the Brooklyn Dodgers followed him to Los Angeles. Roger attended Third Street Elementary, John Burroughs Junior High, and Fairfax High School, where he graduated as valedictorian. He continued his studies in chemistry at Caltech, stopping to work, get married, and start a family. In 1989, determined to teach his children that it's never too late to finish what you started, he proudly completed his B.S. degree there. He spent most of his professional career as an aerospace software engineer, including at Jet Propulsion Laboratory and most recently as manager at Teledyne Controls. Equally important was the High Holidays cantorial work he did for more than 50 years, the last 14 at Congregation Shir Ami. Above all, his greatest joy was being Dad to his four sons. Roger deeply valued his family and friends, making sure to call them on celebratory occasions. A lifelong learner, a determined problem-solver and a mensch's mensch, he always strived to do the right thing, to avoid preconceived judgment, and to maintain the strongest sense of ethics. Roger was known for his curiosity, his brilliance and his sense of humor, including his trademark puns. He was a news and politics junkie, a history buff, a classical music enthusiast, a computer maven, a dedicated "Jeopardy!" viewer and our fix-it man. His goodness and decency are his legacy. Roger was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Frances, in 2016. Roger is survived by his cherished father, Milton; his adoring wife, Melody; his treasured sons, Joshua (Julia Kraft), Jeffrey (Ashley), Kenny, and Daniel; his devoted sister, Irene; his grandson, Jacob; and numerous extended family members. Funeral services will be held at Mount Sinai Hollywood Hills on Sunday, July 15, at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research or Congregation Shir Ami in West Hills.
