Ross William Prout D.D.S. Obituary
December 21, 1925 - November 28, 2017 Dr. Ross W. Prout, age 91, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at his home in Encino, California. Ross was born in Denver, Colorado, to Roscoe W. Prout, Sr. and Elizabeth B. Prout on December 21, 1925. He spent his early years in the small mining town of Rico, Colorado.  The family relocated to Southern California in the 1930s where they maintained a working citrus orchard in the San Fernando Valley. During World War II, Ross served his country by enlisting in the Navy at age 17 and was stationed in Sun Valley, Idaho.  After serving, he progressed through school at UCLA, University of Oregon, University of the Pacific School of Dentistry and the University of Southern California for his Oral Surgery residency. Dr. Prout was a noted oral surgeon who throughout his career was very active in the California Dental and Oral Surgery Societies. He trained numerous dentists and surgeons during his many years as faculty and lecturer at the Los Angeles County USC Medical Center Oral and Maxillofacial surgery residency program.  Dr. Prout was an esteemed colleague and mentor to many dentists and oral surgeons throughout Southern California. Although he had great success academically and professionally, the main passion of his life was his family.  He had a great love story with his wife Joan and wanted to give his five children every opportunity to better themselves and their community. Dr. Prout valued education, traveling and leading a healthy lifestyle.  He was intrigued by history and enjoyed visiting places of significance around the world, often on church pilgrimages with Joan.  His healthy lifestyle included morning runs before the office and focusing on nutrition and staying young.      He leaves behind Joan (Haiden), his loving wife of 61 years, his four daughters, Michelle Prout, Mary Fitzgerald, Lisa Barnes (Daniel), and Haiden Fernandez (Manny), and his son, Ross W. Prout, III (Amanda).  He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren Joshua, Hunter, Elizabeth Kitty, Sloane, Jesslyn, Kristen, Rachel, and Haiden. He was preceded in death by his grandson, A.E. "Po" Bell Jr., son-in-law Rich Fitzgerald, sister Barbara, and brother John Prout. His kind and gentle compassion shown to all his family, friends, colleagues, patients, and community will be greatly missed by all. A memorial mass will be held 12:30pm, Monday, December 11 at St. Cyril of Jerusalem Catholic Church, 15520 Ventura Blvd., Encino, CA 91436.   In lieu of flowers, the Prout family requests donations be made in Dr. Prout's honor to: Catholic Education Foundation of Los Angeles www.cefdn.org  and/or Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of the University of Southern California - Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 925 W. 34th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90089
