Russell J. Osterman Obituary
Russell J. Osterman was born and raised in the small town of Baraga, Michigan, the second of seven children of John and Lempi Osterman. A standout high school athlete in football, basketball and track, Russ attended Michigan Tech and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. A walk-on for the football team, he eventually became a starter and traveled to Pasadena for the 1951 Rose Bowl, where the Wolverines beat Cal 14-6. After playing in the Blue-Grey All-star game, Russ was recruited by the Pittsburg Steelers . However, he decided to apply his newly minted Civil Engineering Degree. While working at the Willow Run Airplane Factory, he met Louise Pomrenke and they were married in 1954. Together, they ventured to sunny California and settled in Pasadena in 1963. That same year, Russ joined the start-up Charles Pankow builders, retiring in 1990 as President of Pankow Development Company. Russ never forgot where he came from and established endowed scholarships for Baraga High school students to attend Michigan Tech and the University of Michigan. He and his wife, Louise, sponsored many educational endeavors and believed in the power of the individual to make the world a better place. Russ joins his wife of 53 years, Louise, who died in 2007. He is survived by his three children, Mary Jo (Paul), Peter (Lisa), and Paul (Sabrina), grandchildren; Nicholas, Louisa, Peter, Cade, Ethan, Cameron, Brady, Gunnar, Joey and Paloma.
