Ruth C. Sweet Obituary
October 12, 1913 - September 7, 2015 Ruth C. Sweet passed away at her home in Beverly Hills, September 7, 2015, just shy of her 102nd birthday. Born Ruth Catherine Hemple in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the oldest of three children, she and her family settled in the San Francisco area when Ruth was two. A 1935 graduate of UC Berkeley, her fascination with the world of retailing led her to Kahns Department Store in Oakland, where she landed a job in sales, a position which quickly led to her appointment as sportswear buyer, a career which flourished for the next ten years. In 1945, she married then Army Captain Clifford Sweet, eventually moving to Southern California where Clifford joined Montgomery Ward in an executive position and Ruth retired to become a housewife and eventually mother to daughter Catherine Elizabeth. After several moves back and forth across the country for Clifford's work, the three settled in Arcadia. In 1965, Ruth returned to the workforce as a buyer for Bullock's, in Los Angeles and Pasadena, a position she held for 12 years. With her husband's passing in 1992, Ruth was motivated to pursue her second love, volunteering. Every Thursday she would don her pink jacket and hold court in the surgical waiting room at Arcadia Methodist Hospital. From her station on the second floor she greeted visitors, gave directions, held hands, served coffee and ran errands, becoming a much-loved fixture throughout the hospital. For the past six years she has lived near her daughter in Beverly Hills where she continued to charm all who knew her with her beauty, grace and warmth. She will truly be missed! She is survived by her daughter, Katy Sweet Harris; grandson Scott Lear; son-in-law Lionel Harris; niece Barbara Tessin Derry; great-nephew William Derry; great-niece Alice Derry Gnall and her long-time caregiver and friend, Irene Marquinez. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to The Methodist Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 60016, Arcadia, CA 91066-6016 in honor of Ruth Sweet.
