Sr. Ruth (Marie Valentine) Schwalenberg

Obituary Condolences

icon November 5, 1931 - December 10, 2015 The second of two children born to Herman Valentine Schwalenberg and Anna Marie Wright in Baltimore, Maryland, Nov. 5, 1931. Ruth is predeceased by her parents and sister, Therese Martin, DMJ. She will be deeply missed by her Community, cousins and former students. Sister's ministries included Teaching in the following schools: St. Sebastian, Los Angeles; St. Paul the Apostle, Westwood and Bishop Conaty High School, Los Angeles. Ruth's expansive vision of Church and Religious Life touched her whole life as a DMJ. After Vatican II, she spent some years in Brazil where she taught Theology and Scripture at the Catholic University of Recife. Her heart was truly missionary and her desire was to remain in Recife. But, from there she was called to Rome to be elected Congregational Superior. She became well known in Leadership circles in Rome (UISG) and later in CA where she served as Provincial of her community in the '80s. Her work of collaboration with LCWR as well as facilitator of several Religious Communities' Chapters energized her vocation and sustained numerous lively conversations on Church matters. After a well-earned sabbatical, Ruth served as Pastoral Associate at St. Patrick's Church in Carlsbad, CA, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Santa Barbara, and at Christ the King Parish in San Bernardino. Her retirement years were spent in Marian Residence, Rancho Palos Verdes where she died peacefully on December 10th. We are especially grateful to the staff, her caregivers and Hospice personnel who gently accompanied her in her final days. Mass of Resurrection will take place at Mortuary Chapel, Holy Cross Cemetery, 5835 Slauson Ave., Culver City on Tuesday, December 29 at 11:00 a.m. Reception will follow immediately, followed by inurnment. Condolences may be registered at MeM.com. Memorials may be made to Daughters of Mary and Joseph Retirement Fund, 5300 Crest Rd., Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275-5004.
