Sadayo Kumagai Obituary
September 27, 1927 - February 14, 2016 Sadayo Washino Kumagai (88) passed away in Los Angeles on Valentine's Day, 2016. Sadayo was born in Sacramento, California on September 27, 1927, the fourth out of five children of Shino and Shimeta Washino. During World War II, Sadayo was evacuated to first, Tule Lake, then Amache internment camps. She graduated from Amache High School in January, 1945. She resettled in the Midwest, first to Chicago, then St. Paul, where she attended University of Minnesota. In 1950, Sadayo married Rikio Kumagai of Seattle, in Washington D.C., where he was working for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. His work as a Chemical Engineer sent them to live in Tonawanda, New York; Wilmington, Delaware; and Tokyo, Japan. After retirement, they relocated to Southern California to be closer to their children. Sadayo is survived by her sons: Wesley (Kathleen), William (Linda) and Robert (Laura); grandchildren: Derik Sam Kumagai, Zugey Kumagai, Zoe Kumagai and Jerald Kumagai; her siblings Tazu Takahashi of San Mateo, California, Kazuo Robert Washino of Davis, California, and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at Hollenbeck Palms Chapel, Boyle Heights, on February 27 at 11 am.
