Sam Menzelos Obituary

October 10, 1922 - December 31, 2015 Soterios "Sam" John Menzelos Sam Menzelos was born in Los Angeles, California on October 10, 1922. His greatest joy was his family. Sam married the love of his life, Fifi, in Savannah, Georgia on April 26, 1953. They shared 62 wonderful years together. Sam and Fifi were travelers, and besides visiting family in Greece, they loved exploring the world. Sam was the son of Greek immigrants John Menzelos and Hrisanthi Androutsos. Both of his parents came from the region of Corinth. Having grown up in Los Angeles, Sam attended Manual Arts High School and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley where he started his officer's training for the Marine Corps. Sam served with the United States Marines Corps during World War II and the Korean War. In World War II Sam was awarded the Purple Heart as an officer in charge of a rifle platoon in Okinawa. He continued through his life to be a proud marine and was an honored guest at many marine reunions throughout the years. He participated in giving testimony for the HBO special "The Pacific." Sam had a successful accounting practice for over 60 years. He was on top of his game and the happiest when he was working. He went into the office regularly and never entirely retired, retaining his keen understanding of accounting and taxes even at the age of 93. One of Sam's proudest moments as an accountant was his role as officer and trustee to the Vasek and Anna Marie Polak Foundation. Through Sam's direction, the Vasek Polak Foundation participated in the growth of many local hospitals and health clinics, including that of Torrance Memorial and Providence Little Company of Mary. He considered his clients his friends and always approached his practice with integrity. He is survived by his loving wife Fifi, beloved children, George and John, daughter-in-law Barbara, and precious grandchildren Arianna and Sam. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 7th at 10:30 AM at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church, 722 Knob Hill, Redondo Beach, CA 90277. Interment immediately following at Green Hills Memorial Park, 27501 South Western Avenue, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275. Donations in his memory may be made to the: Semper Fi Fund, 825 College Blvd., Suite 102 PMB 609, Oceanside, CA 92057 or St. Katherine Church Building Fund, 722 Knob Hill, Redondo Beach, CA 90277.
