Sherwin Lewis Obituary
June 8, 1927 - July 7, 2018 Sherwin Lewis died at home in Palos Verdes Estates, California, on July 7, 2018. He was 91. Born in Chicago, Illinois, on June, 8, 1927, Mr. Lewis was the son of Albert Lewis and Rhea Bernstein Lewis and the brother of Jeanne Lewis and Anita Lewis Gross who both predeceased him. Mr. Lewis grew up in Gary, Indiana, where he met the love of his life and future wife, Rose-Anne Goldman. He graduated from Purdue University in 1949. Prior to graduating, Mr. Lewis enlisted in the United States Navy, serving in the final days of World War II and then returning to serve throughout the Korean War. He and Ms. Goldman married in 1952 and moved from Indiana to Southern California, where Mr. Lewis began a 37-year professional career in the aerospace industry. Mr. Lewis spent 28 of those years at Aerospace Corporation as a propulsion engineer and was Director of Liquid Propulsion Development for the Titan III program. Titan III lifted NASA's most significant planetary exploration spacecraft, including the Mars Viking landers, Voyager I and II and the Cassini Saturn orbiter. Toward the end of his career, Mr. Lewis focused on studying the environmental impact of hydrazine fuel usage on the Space Shuttle. He and his wife lived in California for over 65 years, the last 53 years of which were spent in the house they helped design and build with the architectural firm of Buff & Hensman and which brought them much joy and contentment. Mr. Lewis had many passions including travel, physical fitness and reading, particularly mystery novels. He enjoyed listening to classical music with his wife, and they were both long-term supporters of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He was intellectually curious about a wide range of subjects and could always be counted upon for succinct and incisive conversation. Above all else, Mr. Lewis was devoted to his family. He was the proud father of Cynthia Lewis Beck (Ronald) and Bradford Scott. His son died in 1993. In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Lewis is survived by his five grandchildren, Stephanie Beck Bronfman (Jeremy), Peter Lewis Beck (Elisabeth), Michael William Beck, John Cameron Beck and Catherine Taylor Beck and his four great-grandchildren, Sadie Miles Bronfman, Jack Hamilton Bronfman, Beckett Woods Bronfman and Jonah Horace Beck. Always a gentleman, we will miss him greatly.
