Shirley Oliver Gentile Obituary
August 23, 1925 - August 9, 2016 Shirley Oliver Gentile passed peacefully in her sleep August 9, 2016, two weeks short of her 91st birthday. Born in Ottawa, Canada to J. Edwin Oliver and Bessie Townsend, Shirley immigrated to the US in 1942 in order to work for the British Security Coordination under the direction of William Stephenson. Waiting for a friend at Penn Station she was offered a light for her cigarette by her future husband 1st Lt. Walter T. Gentile. Being military Walt and Shirley's family grew as they travelled the world. Marc (CC) was born in Osaka, Japan, Karen (Gruwell) in Portsmouth, Va., Matthew (Noelle) in Alexandria Va. Relocating from the east coast in 1956, they moved to Palos Verdes and Christopher was born. Reassignment sent them to Wiesbaden, Germany where Andrew was born. Military retirement brought them back to PV where Shirley got her real estate license. Working in the area for years she ultimately became co- broker/owner of Rolling Hills Realty. With family grown, in 1988, she moved to southern Spain to enjoy retirement. Saying goodbye to Spain in 2007 Shirley returned to So Cal to live with her daughter. Always social, she did everything from dancing to the Big Bands in the 40's to little league mom and president of the American Club in Fuengirola, Spain. Shirley was smart and ambitious and loved to laugh. An adventurer by nature she was always ready to see new places and meet new friends. Shirley was preceded in death by Walt in 1974 and son Christopher in 2008. She is remembered well by friends around the world. Shirley will be missed and cherished by her family of children, 15 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A special thanks to Diana M. for her support and the care she gave. RIP Mom, you were the best.
