Shirley Schnair Karton Obituary
July 2, 1917 - August 26, 2017 She lived amongst us for over one hundred years. When her father died suddenly in the Depression, the 17-year old with enormous dreams dropped out of college to support her mother, and learned how to manage and how to thrive, the sustaining skills for the years to come. For over half of those hundred years she loved and worked beside her husband Harold, and together they made a home for her mother Annie who lived with them and helped to raise their three sons (David, Joshua, Mitchell). She cherished her daughters-in-law (Cheryl, Ann) who so enriched her life and her grand-daughter (Sophie) who so appreciated her. She believed in lifelong learning - from her service in the PTA to her own adult Bat Mitzvah, from the World Affairs Council to current events classes, beginning each morning with her newspaper, and ending each day with the evening news. She relished humor and wit, participated actively in her city, her synagogue, and faithfully attended the symphony and the theater. She believed deeply in civil rights, women's rights and her country. Whether arranging words or clothing, she brought enormous care and style to the presentation. Her motto was 'flowers for the living': in her memory, please send someone in your life a hand-written note of gratitude, respect or love. Services will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at Mout Sinai Hollywood Hills, 5950 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles.
