Shirley Wilburne Obituary
1919 - 2017 Shirley Wilburne, age 98, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and sister-in-law died peacefully on 7/11/17. She was born in New York City to Fannie and Samuel Winters. Older sister of Nathan Winters. At the age of 7 Shirley began singing on stage professionally, and as a teenager performed regularly on WMIL Radio station in New York. She continued as a young woman singing on her own show, The Shirley Winters Radio Show, broadcast from New York City. Soon she met a handsome young cardiologist/internist, Dr. Morris (Morrie) Wilburne, and they married in 1941. With Morris becoming a U.S. Army Captain in World War II, Shirley relocated with him throughout the war as a dedicated army wife. In 1945 Shirley and Morris were blessed with daughter Barbara, followed by Harriet in 1947, and Corinne in 1948, when they moved to Los Angeles. Shirley continued to entertain friends and family with her musical talent, singing and playing piano. For many years, Shirley and Morris enjoyed their special friends at Hillcrest Country Club, and after Morris passed away in 1996, Shirley volunteered in the Cedars-Sinai and Los Robles Hospital Emergency Rooms. Shirley was preceded in death by Morris, after 55 loving years of marriage, and by her beloved daughter Dr. Barbara Roberta Wilburne. She is survived by daughters Dr. Harriet Wilburne Curcio (Rick), and Dr. Corinne Wilburne Barker (Robert), grandson Dan Curcio (Jenna), granddaughter Brittany Barker, sister-in-law Barbara Winters, niece Jana Young (Jeff), nephew Dr. Robert Winters (Laurie), and very special friends Chris Curcio, Larry Dennis. Shirley was a charmer to the end, and her 98 years will be remembered for her delicious Thanksgiving feasts, her strength, her music, her sense of humor, and her loving dedication to her family. Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary, 6001 W. Centinela Ave., LA, CA 90045.
