Sidney Roberts Obituary
March 11, 1918 - July 20, 2016 Dr. Sidney Roberts was a pioneer in the history of the UCLA School of Medicine. In 1948, he served as the 1st Acting Chairman of the Department of Physiological Chemistry and later played a role in development of the Brain Research Institute. He won the CIBA Award in Endocrinology for his research on steroid hormone action and worked to understand the role of adenylate cyclase and protein phosphorylation in memory and brain function, earning him honors as a Guggenheim Fellow. He received a BS in biology at MIT in 1939, did graduate research at Harvard and earned a PhD in Physiological Chemistry at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in 1943. Later, he served as a Lieutenant in the Surgeon General's Office, US Army. Sidney is survived by his wife and life-long colleague Dr. Clara M. Szego, Emeritus Professor of Molecular & Cellular Biology at UCLA.
