Sidney W. Helperin Obituary
February 8, 1926 - March 5, 2016 Sidney Helperin, M.D., of Tarzana, CA, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 surrounded by family. He had suffered from Alzheimer's disease toward the end of his life, but died of sclerosing cholangitis, which he had managed for 40 years, outliving his initial prognosis by 35 years. Sid was born in Timmins, Ontario, Canada. He was the fourth of seven children born to Irene and Louis Helperin. He graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School and moved to the U.S. in 1951 where he met and married Vikki Schnur of White Plains, NY. They had three children. Sid enjoyed his career as an anesthesiologist, working first in Cleveland, Ohio and then for many years in the Los Angeles area. Known for his warmth and sense of humor, many have well-remembered stories of his antics. He and Vikki became private pilots and enjoyed flying together for years. He was a ham radio operator, an extra in movies and TV, and a lover of opera, poetry and foreign languages. Sid authored and published "Spanish Phrasebook for Anesthesia" which has helped medical professionals and patients across the United States and abroad. Sid is survived by Vikki, his wife of almost 65 years; daughter Amy (Jeff) Krivis, and son Robby (Joanne) Helperin; grandchildren Hannah (David) Matthew, Rachel Krivis, J.J. Helperin, and Danya Helperin; and great-grandson Will Matthew. Funeral services were held at Eden Memorial Park.
