Stephen Titus Obituary
February 15, 1924 - October 19, 2016 Stephen Titus, aged 92, passed away October 19 from trauma resulting from an accident while bicycle riding, one of his favorite activities, near his home in Balboa, CA. Steve was born on February 15, 1924 in Los Angeles to James Clifford Titus and Renata Garst Titus. He grew up in Hancock Park, Los Angeles and spent his summers in Newport Beach. He attended Thacher School in Ojai and had many fond memories of his time there. He was a naval officer in WWII specializing in anti-submarine warfare. After the war he graduated from Pomona College and then Stanford Business School. Steve married Catherine Livingston raising their four children in Hancock Park. Steve had a life-long love for the ocean, sailing a Snowbird at age 12 and as an adult enjoyed one-design and ocean racing, including crewing in the Transpacific Yacht Race. He shared his passion for cruising Southern California's offshore islands with his family aboard "Windward", his Cal 36 sloop. Steve was a member of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, Los Angeles Country Club, the Breakfast Panel, the Lincoln Club, and for many years, The California Club, the Los Angeles Yacht Club and the Eureka Gun Club. An Investment Counselor, Steve was well known in the investment industry starting in the early 1950's. He merged his firm Koenig, Hawkins & Titus with Scudder, Stevens & Clark in the late 1960's and more recently was an integral part of Payden & Rygel, where he continued to commute to his Los Angeles office. Steve is survived by his sister, Kathleen Wall of Irvine, his children James (Margy), Stephen (Patrice), Theresa Essen (Rich) and Louise Casey (Tim), as well as grandchildren Nicolas and Bolton Titus, Hilary and Hope Titus, Brian (Danielle), Scott, and Eric Essen, and Cameron and Kevin Casey along with his great-granddaughter Kensington Casey. The family requests that should friends desire a donation be sent in his memory to Thacher School, 5025 Thacher Road, Ojai, CA 93023. The family plans a private memorial service at a later date.
