Susan B. Tully Obituary
July 12, 1941 - July 31, 2016 Sue was born in San Francisco to Gerard and Norma (Hand) Balsley. Her early years were spent in various parts of our wonderful country as her father worked for various companies while ascending the corporate ladder. She graduated from Holy Names High School in Piedmont, CA. She then attended UCLA and was a member of Mortar Board. After three years as an undergraduate, she was accepted by UCLA Medical School from which she graduated in 1966. She then trained as a Pediatrician at LACo-USC (Los Angeles), Kaiser Foundation Hospital (Oakland), and the University of New Mexico Medical Center (Albuquerque). She began her academic pediatric practice in New Mexico as a junior faculty member. She then moved to the University of California, Irvine Medical Center in 1972, LACo-USC Medical Center in 1979, and Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in 1989 as Clinical Professor. Her interest was Pediatric emergencies and trauma prevention. She was Chief of the Pediatric Emergency Room at each of the last three institutions. She retired in 1997, but given her passion for teaching, continued to be involved in a Pediatric Continuity Clinic (teaching residents) for a number of years after her retirement. She enjoyed reading and was proud of reading about one book per week, even in Medical School. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and could always do the Sunday Times puzzle in about 20-30 minutes. She traveled to many places with her family, and being with the family in many of the destinations was the best part of the travels. She is survived by her husband William, MD (Bill), to whom she was married for 51 years, and sons Michael (Jill) and Stephen (Michele). She is also survived by two sisters (Wendy Krause and Lynne Gleason, JD) and one brother (Gerard Balsley, MD). The best part of her last years was watching her grandchildren grow up. Madison, Mackenzie, Payton, and Adelina are beautiful and talented young people of whom she was very proud. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the "Susan B. Tully, MD Pediatric Fund," UNM Foundation, Two Woodward Center, 700 Lomas Blvd., NE, Suite 108, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87102.
