Susan Grotstein Obituary
May 15, 1936 - December 6, 2015 Susan Grotstein, 79, loving and deeply loved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, died peacefully at home this past December after a valiant two-year battle with cancer. Sue was born in Ohio but moved with her family to Los Angeles as a young girl and considered herself an L.A. native. She graduated with honors from UCLA in 1958 and began her teaching career at UCLA's Seeds Elementary School. Sue fell in love on a blind date with a gifted young psychoanalyst and fellow Akron native, James Grotstein; they were married in February 1959, and soon became the devoted, loving parents of Joshua and Laurie. She later followed Jim into the field of psychology, returning to UCLA to earn her Masters in Social Work in 1977 and becoming a highly intuitive and talented psychotherapist herself. Sue and Jim, already blessed with lives full of accomplishment and fond attachments, were especially proud of their four adoring grandchildren -- Clara, Rose, Max, and Margot -- welcoming each one with tremendous joy. After 56 years of meaningful work, close friendships, family dinners, countless puns and many world adventures together, Sue lost her devoted life companion in May of last year, when Jim passed away from complications due to cancer. Despite her own serious health issues, she delivered a moving tribute to her husband at the memorial she planned for him from her hospital bed, on what would have been his 90th birthday. Sue died four weeks later, and was put to rest with her beloved Jim at Hillside Memorial Cemetery. Though she is profoundly missed by her children, grandchildren and many dear friends, the memory of this beautiful, warm, perceptive, loving and treasured human being will live in our hearts for the rest of our lives.
