Suzanne Techentin Miller

Obituary Condolences

Pasadena, California After a long battle with cancer, Suzanne Techentin Miller passed away peacefully at her home last Sunday morning August 2, 2015, surrounded by her children. Born in Los Angeles to Mary Margaret Caton (from Illinois) and Arthur Henry Techentin (from Iowa), Suzanne was raised in La Ca¿ada, attending Anoakia School for Girls. She graduated from USC with a Bachelor's Degree in History and later received her JD from the University of La Verne. Suzanne married Dr. Robert Woodfall Janes of La Ca¿ada in 1961 with whom she had two children: Cynthia Janes Garlough and Stephen Osmonde Janes. They divorced in 1973 and Suzanne attended law school, graduating at the top of her class. She passed the California State Bar in 1977 and was a successful litigator in Los Angeles for 18 years. In 1984 she met and fell in love with Gavin Miller, also a successful Los Angeles attorney, and they married in 1987. Gavin was truly the love of her life and they spent thirteen wonderful years together until his passing in 1997. They enjoyed many mutual passions including extensive travel and walking tours in Europe and Asia, visiting their extended families, watching movies, and relaxing at home in both Pasadena and Santa Barbara with the animals they treasured: a yellow Labrador named Skye, and a Calico cat named Chaucer. Suzanne was an avid tennis player, but her love for tennis was equaled by her remarkably deft skill at playing bridge and her dedication as a docent with The Huntington Library in San Marino, where she volunteered in the 1970's and again starting in 1995. She was also an active member of The Valley Hunt Club, The California Club and Birnam Wood Country Club. Suzanne was a private and independent woman, a voracious reader and a great sudoku player. She was a tremendously involved and active grandmother, known as "Mema," who attended many school plays, music recitals and other family events with tireless enthusiasm. She was a wonderful mother to her children; a beloved sister to her brother, Thomas Arthur Techentin and sister-in-law to Elayne Griffin Techentin; a spirited aunt; and, a great, loyal friend and companion. She is survived by her children Cynthia Janes Garlough (Bob Garlough), Stephen Janes (Angela Westwater); her grandchildren Colin Woodfall Janes and Quinby Caton Janes; her niece, Kristin Techentin Harrison (Berkeley Harrison); and her nephews Warren Arthur Techentin (Mimi Won) and Nicholas Wayne Techentin (Katya). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Huntington Library. Cabot & Sons, Pasadena Directors
