Thomas J. McKimmey Obituary
September 20, 1918 - October 8, 2015 Thomas J. McKimmey died peacefully on October 8 at the age of 97. Born in Rockford, Illinois, Tom graduated from Villanova University in 1942 before joining the Army. After being commissioned as an officer, he was sent to England where he participated in the invasion of Normandy. Tom later served as a military policeman, helping to establish and maintain a German POW camp. Like many WWII veterans, Tom benefited from the G.I. Bill after returning to the states. He earned his Master's Degree at the University of Notre Dame, where he met his beloved wife Gloria. The two moved to Los Angeles in 1955, and Tom taught English at Los Angeles High School until retiring in 1984. He was an accomplished poet, often writing sonnets to commemorate special occasions and limericks to express his liberal political views. In addition to teaching, Tom moonlighted as an usher at Dodger Stadium for 20 years, relishing the opportunity to see thousands of baseball games. In recent years, Tom continued his vocation as an educator, speaking at local schools about his wartime service. Tom leaves behind three daughters: Catherine Mary (Jeremy Nelson), Maggie (Rick Harada), and Teresa (Will Caven); grandsons Daniel Ross, Liam Caven, and Ethan Nelson; granddaughter Alice Harada; two cherished nieces, Mary McKimmey Catalan and Ann McKimmey Sanchez; and two nephews, Tom O'Meara and Mike McKimmey. He was preceded in death by his wife Gloria in 2011. For information about services, please see the Mission Hills Mortuary website.
