Vernon Henry Burling Obituary
March 27, 1924 - February 22, 2016 Vernon Burling passed peacefully in his sleep at the age of 91. Vern was born in Superior Wisconsin, to Erik Henning and Gerda Marie Burling, Swedish immigrants. Vern was the youngest of 4 children, with sisters Ruth, Zaida, and Renee. Sadly Vern's mother died when he was 13 from TB and his extended family of aunts, and elder sister Zaida and her husband Rube, helped to raise him. Vern was drafted into the army in WWII, serving in Germany and France in the Signal Co. He came to Merced for his training for Signal Co. Seeing how beautiful CA was, he vowed to return. After the war, Vern received his BA in accounting at University of Minn., and returned to CA, settling in LA. Vern worked in accounting his whole career, retiring from the LA Community College District as a College Fiscal Administrator in 1979. Vern also worked in his own business as an Enrolled Agent concentrating on his favorite area of finance - income tax preparation. Vern loved the outdoors and was an avid hiker and skier through much of his life. He was a long-time member of the Sierra Club where he met the lovely Irmgard Dormanns, a recent German immigrant who shared the same interests. They married in 1956 and began their family in 1959 with daughter Kristina and in 1966 the arrival of their second daughter, Elke, completed the family. Vern was well known as a kind man, with strong family values, and conservative politics. He had a ready chuckle, and supported the ambitions and dreams of his daughters. He was an accomplished amateur photographer winning a wonderful Mexican vacation with one of his photos. He volunteered with his church in many ways, and assisted Northeast Trees with their accounting. In retirement he led a quiet life in the home that he and Irmgard built together in 1959, did taxes for many, and traveled with his family. In later years, his young granddaughters, Chloe and Danika, were a great joy. Vern is survived by his wife of 59 years, Irmgard, daughters Kristina and Elke, son-in-law David Dupuis, granddaughters Danika and Chloe, and other extended relations, David Edwardy, Denise, and cousins Hans and Ruth Johannson. The family thanks their dear neighbors, the Merlo's, Zeny Bernadino, and all of Vern's caregivers, esp. Vicky Jacobson, for easing his final days and their continued affection/support for Irmgard. He is greatly missed by all. A celebration of life is planned for Friday, March, 25th at 2 pm at First Lutheran Church of Glendale, 1300 E. Colorado St., Glendale, CA, with a sharing of food and memories at the Burling house to follow.
