Vilma L. Potter Obituary
January 3, 1924 - January 29, 2018 Sic transit Gloria mundi Born in Brooklyn, New York, Vilma attended Brooklyn College at age 15 and thence Duke University for graduate studies, the springboard to her university teaching career. She was an accomplished piano player and academic. Vilma was a professor of English at California State University, Los Angeles, from 1961 to 1992. She remained active with the university emeriti community and taught poetry long after her retirement. Her several volumes of poetry while dense, have been widely enjoyed. She remained intellectually curious well into her 90s and continued to polish her Mozart until illness and old age swept her away. Throughout her life she was more interested in critical thinking than in fitting-in or joining-in. She encouraged her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to place a premium on scholarship. Vilma, a rock for many who knew her, will be missed by all. Wife of Bertram L. Potter (1917-2008) and mother to Paul Potter (1947-2016) (Esther), Vilma is survived by her children Alexandra Watts (Donald) and Joshua Potter (Dorothy); grandchildren Billie (Jason Melillo), Pablo (Jenny), Moira (Shawn Thomas), Meghan (Mike Shea), Fiona, Sara, and Amanda; and great-grandchildren Cameron, Audrey, Colin, Spencer, Miette, Eleanor, and Kitty.
