Warren Stanley Nyback Obituary
August 2, 1939 - May 6, 2017 The Rev. Canon Warren Stanley Nyback, age 77, died May 6 at his home in Claremont with his husband and daughter at his side. Born August 2, 1939 in Los Angeles, Warren was raised in Indio, CA. He earned a BA from USC, and an MDiv. from Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley. In 1963, he married Gretchen Woolpert, his childhood friend and the first love of his life. They had two daughters, Amy Elizabeth and Rachel Anne. Warren was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1965 and served at St. Luke's, Long Beach, St. Timothy's, Compton, and almost 30 years at St. Paul's, Pomona. After the untimely deaths of Amy and Gretchen, Warren met the second love of his life, attorney Michael Witmer in 1992. Their marriage in San Francisco in 2004 was annulled by the California Supreme Court, and they remarried in 2008. A perennial advocate for the sick and underprivileged, Warren helped establish a senior housing complex in Compton, volunteered the AIDS Project Los Angeles, and with Michael, rode in the California AIDS Ride and nurtured the LGBT community in Pomona. Warren's passion for theater ranged from Broadway to Shakespeare. An accomplished actor, he frequently performed in community theater during his 30 years in Pomona. Services will be held Saturday, May 20 at 11 am at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 242 East Alvarado St., Pomona. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul's in honor of Warren.
