Wilfred Davis (Bill) Fletcher Obituary
January 24, 1922 - June 22, 2016 Bill Fletcher, 94, of Palos Verdes Estates, California, passed away peacefully at home on June 22, 2016. Bill was born in Boise, Idaho to Marie Davis Fletcher and Daniel Steen Fletcher on January 24, 1922. Bill graduated from high school in Los Angeles, attended Menlo Junior College, Stanford University, and volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps. After school and military service, Bill joined the family business in Los Angeles, Fletcher Oil and Refinery, and became the purchasing agent and secretary-treasurer of the company. In the late '70s Bill began what was to become a lifelong passion of collecting art. Bill's love of art came from his childhood experiences with his artistic mother and his grandmother who was a painter. Bill focused on acquiring abstract and contemporary works from the 1960s into the 21st century and his collection eventually grew to hundreds of pieces of art. He has donated much of his collection to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Long Beach Museum of Art, and the Boise Art Museum. Bill was an avid skier and owned a home in Sun Valley, Idaho, for many years, as well as living in his main residence in Palos Verdes Estates. He was one of the earliest members of the Palos Verdes Golf Club and enjoyed the food there as much as the golf! Bill was a parishioner at St. John Fisher Church in Rancho Palos Verdes and looked forward to singing in the choir on Sundays. Bill loved spending time with his family and enjoyed the companionship of a supportive group of friends he knew for over fifty years. He also cultivated lifelong friendships as a prominent member of the art and golf communities. Bill will be sorely missed by many. Bill is survived by his sister-in-law, Myrna Fletcher, nieces: Candy Fletcher, Linnea Fletcher, Roxie Fletcher, Pam Fletcher, Tracey Windes, and nephew Steve Fletcher. He was predeceased by brothers: Robert G. Fletcher and Daniel Fletcher; nephews: Robert (Luke) Fletcher and Rex Stevenson; parents Daniel Steen Fletcher and Marie (Ree) Fletcher. A memorial service will be held for Bill Fletcher at St. John Fisher Church in Rancho Palos Verdes on August 6, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. There will be a reception following the service at the church.
