Beloved husband, and father, a retired businessman and realtor, died on January 11th in Monterey, California. Bill was born December 11, 1919 in Los Angeles, graduated from UCLA in 1941, and that August married his wife Claire, of Los Angeles, who lives in the Carmel Highlands. As a Naval Reserve officer, he was called to active duty to Pearl Harbor later that year. After the war, he raised his children- Nancy, Sharon, Wendy and Don in Altadena, California, while working with his father's L.A. Brick and Clay Co. which later merged with Pacific Clay Products. Bill was devoted to his grandchildren Chris Hartzell, Rowshan Reordan, Starr Hartzell, Aurora Hartzell (Wendy-Williams, Oregon): Andrew (wife Laura), Sam and Lissie (great grandchild, Jovanna) Strange (Sharon-Medford, Oregon); Breanna and Bret Reordan (Don and Lynn-Jacksonville, Oregon). Others of his family include Bill, Kathleen and Stephanie Spear; George and Ligia Spear, Sarah Spear-Barrett and Todd Barrett, and Liam, Conall, and Tiege Barrett, their children (Nancy-Pasadena, California). Bill loved the ocean and water sports; from bodysurfing at Oceanside California, to life-guarding in L.A., to Pacific Coast Championship water polo at UCLA. Folk dancing with the Mountain Dancers, square dancing, handball, tennis and sailing at Lake Arrowhead, and camping and skiing at Yosemite were other activities he enjoyed. An Eagle Scout, Bill was very active in the Boy Scouts of America; Troop 10 in Los Angeles, and later Troop 4 in Pasadena. He and Claire moved to Carmel in 1976, where he worked in real estate, was active in the Kiwanis Club of Carmel Valley and became on of the first volunteer guides and a Charter Member at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. As in scouting, he especially enjoying educating young people at the aquarium. A Celebration of Bill's Life is scheduled for 2:00 pm Sunday, January 19th, 2003, at the Community Church of the Monterey Peninsula, 1 mile east of Hwy 1 on Carmel Valley Road, near Rancho Canada Golf Club. There will be a brief celebration at the tide pool area in the Monterey Bay Aquarium at 8:30 to 9:30 am Monday January 20th.
