William L. Sibley Obituary
March 26, 1926 - February 21, 2016 Bill was a devoted family man, outdoorsman, world traveler, and ground breaking intellect. He had a very broad definition of family that included his extended family, his friends, the friends of his children and friends of his grandchildren. He recently opened his home to a lovely foster daughter. If you wanted to be in his family, you were welcome and had a safe, non-judgmental place to go. He loved the outdoors. He led Boy Scout camping trips and hikes, and raised 3 Eagle Scouts, Jim, John and Rob. He had 50 years in Scouting, and earned the Silver Beaver award for a person of exceptional character and contribution to his council. Bill loved to travel; whether it was family camping around the United States, or traveling in Europe and Asia or on cruises with his granddaughters. At heart, Bill was an intellectual; no matter the topic, he could engage in an interesting discussion. He received a Bachelors and Masters in Mathematics from UCLA on the GI bill, the first family member to go to college. In 1955 he went to work for the Rand Corporation in the fledgling profession of Computer Scientist. While at Rand he worked on some of the seminal work that defined how we interact with computers today. His last year was his life in microcosm. He went to Alaska to see the aurora borealis. He went to his grandson's graduation in Annapolis. For the 4th of July he visited family in Granite Bay to play Pinochle and laugh. In August he took his last fishing trip to Eagle Lake with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. And his very last trip was for a beloved tradition of Thanksgiving with extended family.
