Yolanda Torres Obituary
December 6, 1926 - September 1, 2015 Yolanda Torres was a life-force, embracing what's important for children: good health, strong parental ties, belief in their abilities to be whatever they choose and nurturing the loves of her life: her children Carlos, Marco, Cristina, Diego, and Mateo and grandsons Jesse and Jason. Born and raised in East Los Angeles, Yolanda attended Roosevelt High School, earned a BA in Art at CSULA and a MA in Child Development at Pacific Oaks College. She co-directed the Family Day Care Project at Pacific Oaks College, co-authored a much loved book, "I'm Not Just a Sitter," visited Cesar Chavez in Delano, and helped set up a child care program for the staff and families there. Yolanda was a well respected educator and beloved mentor, serving as director of Pacific Oaks Children's School, founding director of the employer-sponsored child care center for Huntington Hospital, and as commissioner on the Los Angeles County Commission for Children and Families. Appreciative of nature, she delighted in taking her children on annual camping trips to Yosemite and many other national parks. As a life-long artist, she enjoyed creating in all art forms. Yolanda retired to follow an extraordinary dream. Deeply committed to non-violent activism in behalf of equality, justice, and peace, she joined the Global Walk for a More Livable World, a cross-country peace and environmental awareness walk from Santa Monica Pier to the United Nations Headquarters in Manhattan. Once home, she returned to Pacific Oaks Children's School as interim director, staying three years, served on the board of Mother's Club, and volunteered thousands of hours at Huntington Memorial Hospital. All who knew Yolanda will miss her beauty, laughter, and gentle, empathetic, compassionate, wise ways. To honor her memory, a special fund has been established at Pacific Oaks Children's School that will be used to purchase books and provide enrichment for the students.
