Maxwell Hillary SALTER

SALTER, Maxwell Hillary Cherished husband of Janet (Lipsky) for 68 years, father of Pepper (Joseph) Edmiston, Michael (Toby) and Laura Shields, revered and adored grandfather of Jon, Matt, Susan, Ben, Candy, Dana, Matthew, Scott, Mira, Charlie and William. Born in Brighton Beach, New York, January 29, 1920, died July 6, 2010, Salter, popularly known as "Sonny," served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, attaining the rank of Specialist A. He met and married Janet in 1942 and the couple settled down in San Luis Obispo, California. They became involved in the Jewish community and he went into business with a clothing store named Beno's. After they moved to Los Angeles in the late 1940s, he expanded Beno's into a successful statewide clothing chain of which his son Michael became president. In addition to Beno's, he was vice president of Unity Savings of Southern California and an officer of Diagnostic Products, Inc. He was also a member of Hillcrest Country Club. Early on, he paralleled his business activity with community service. He was active with the Jewish Federation Council of Los Angeles and Bonds for Israel. The Salters moved to Beverly Hills where he was eventually elected the city's mayor for two terms. The family joined Temple Beth Am where he served four terms (1974 to 1978) as president of the congregation. He was deeply affected when his first grandchild, David, was a victim of cancer in the third year of his life and, encouraged by his daughter, Pepper, in 1974 helped establish what is now known as Happy Trails Camp, which he generously funded for juvenile victims of the dreaded disease. All the charities to which "Sonny" contributed are too innumerable to mention. Memorial services will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 11, at Temple Beth Am, 1039 S. La Cienega Blvd. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to Temple Beth Am, Happy Trails Camp or the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts.
