George Ketterl Obituary

Ketterl, George William
August 10, 1939 - November 2, 2010
George was born on August 10, 1939 in Fargo, North Dakota, and died on November 2, 2010, in his home in Venice, California from complications from melanoma.

George grew up in Moorhead, Minnesota, graduated from Moorhead High School in 1957, and graduated from Moorhead State College in 1963. He worked in advertising art, then moved to California to begin his graduate studies at UC Santa Barbara. After a brief return to Minnesota, he returned to California, and attended Claremont Graduate School, where he completed his graduate studies in 1970.
After working in various teaching positions at colleges, he became one of the founding faculty at California State University Bakersfield, and he was a professor of art there until 2010. He inspired his students to realize their talents and to see themselves and the value of art in the world, and many of his students have become successful artists. He also had a successful career as an artist, and his art has been exhibited internationally and is in collections around the world.

George was a long time Venice resident, and his studio was a regular stop on the Venice Art Walk. He touched and inspired everyone he met with his youthful presence, intelligence, compassion, and unique artistic vision. He enjoyed traveling around the world, driving fast in his mustang convertible, and spending time with his family and pets.

He is survived by his wife, Lynette, brothers Del and Kurt, sons Jack, Jim and Joe, daughters-in-law Dinah and Liz, and granddaughters Madalee and Jessa.

CSUB will have an exhibition of his latest paintings at the Tod Madigan Gallery, with a closing celebration in May. There will also be a silent auction featuring art work of his former students and the art department faculty to benefit a scholarship fund being established in his honor.

I only recently "met" you.... through your paintings that grace the walls of The Mansion in Las Vegas. They captivated me and stirred my blood. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world.

i just found out you left us. but your spirit remains with us. you were a nice
man and i as a art student in the late 70s to early 80s learned all about
conceptal art having a dialectic with ones art. i still have my notebook that
you had us keep with your wriiten words of encouragement. i always appreciated
those words. You were a keeper. Life is way to short.

You my sage
I miss you well
I know you know
You always did
and I believe
you always will

Though this room
has divided us
my heart knows
you're not far from us
I think of you
every single day

Sunday dinners
delicious food
on your Venice deck
talk of art
your students
endearing stories
your flirtatious
admiration
for Lynette
laughter
expressions
of love
dear furry friends
bottles of wine
points of perception
challenging each other
pause
twinkle of the eyes

Cheers to you George!

You've made our world a brighter place...

I'm still missing you George. I keep expecting to see you parked on campus and walking down the hall. I feel such sadness that I my time with you has ended but I'm grateful that it was enough time to change me forever. You were inspiring and you fostered individuality and growth within me. You helped me to see who I really was and I feel blessed to have known you because I know I'm a better person because of it. I will forever miss you.

Jorge,
What I really wanted to say is "thank you" for telling me to become a professional artist...when that idea never crossed my mind not even once in my life. You believed in me...even when I never did. I said NEVER.
Your endless positive spirit inspires me to never give up on being an artist.

I will always love you.

George,
Your passing brings back memories from the 70s when I was a green kid that only wanted to be an artist, nothing more. We were young and I wish we were still there. The passage of time is so cruel. I have never said this before, but I really did admire you. Rick Kolar

Ketterl,
I hate goodbyes. I know what they say about the better place and being happier now but I miss you damn it! You were such a huge inspiration to me and helped me grow as an artist and a person. You emitted an energy of goodness and wisdom and carefreeness that was contagious in the BEST way. Its the things we don't say that we regret and I regret not telling you how very important you were to me and how much I grew from knowing you. You were an amazing man Ketterl and I'll forever miss you.

George was a friend of mine. Anyone who can say that knows what a wild ride that could be. No simple conversations, just a merry-go-round of ideas and challenges. What fun! Thanks from your friend, Bob Balocca.

George, what can I say other than you taught me so much when it came to art. You never ceased to make me (as well as many others) laugh. I'm going to miss seeing you around the art building and just standing around chatting. I'm glad that I got the chance to take so many classes with you.

Dear George,
Thank you for sharing your gift with students like me. I was blessed to be able to access it during my time at CSUB. I will always remember you in a white t-shirt and shorts with your wild and crazy hair. I will miss you!
Love,

You rascal! I can see you driving fast, with the wind in your hair, and your great, big smile! Peace and love to you. You are missed for now, but I fully expect to see you later! You and your lovely bride always remembered me and I'll always remember you. xo...kp
