Francis Eugene YATES M.D. Obituary
Dr. Yates died at home on January 20, 2015. He was 87. Gene Yates received his medical degree from Stanford University in 1951. He served four years as a medical officer in the US Navy. Yates had a long and illustrious career in medical research. He brought tools of mathematics, physics, and engineering into the biological sciences, particularly the fields of endocrinology and aging. He held academic positions at Harvard, Stanford, USC, and UCLA where he held professorships in medical engineering, chemical engineering, and medicine. He was also a principal scientist at the pharmaceutical company ALZA Corp, and also at NASA. He was a mentor to many young scientists. He loved to ski, loved the outdoors, loved to hunt. He had encyclopedic knowledge in many fields. He also loved good food and wine, and books. He was unflaggingly generous to many people, institutions, and causes. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dr. Margaret Yates; his children Katherine, Gregory, Peter, and Eugene; and by seven grandchildren. He is deeply loved and missed. A memorial service celebrating Dr. Yates' life will be held at his home on Saturday, February 28.
