Eldor George Sagehorn, Jr., D.D.S. Phd, Abo known familiarly as "Sage", passed away March 1, 2012 at the age of 88. Dr. Sagehorn was born in Stanton, North Dakota to Eldor and Jane Sagehorn. After graduating from Jamestown College, North Dakota, where he played football and basketball, he joined the Navy in the V12 Program and earned a D.D.S. Phd. from the Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC in 1946. Following his service to our country as a Navy dentist, he attended and graduated from the University of California San Francisco in their postgraduate orthodontic program. Sage developed a premier orthodontic practice in Long Beach, California in partnership with Dr. James Loos, D.D.D., M.S. and served many years with The Long Beach Dental Society, The Charles H. Tweed International Foundation, The Angle Society and as a diplomat for The American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Sagehorn was appointed Clinical Associate Professor at USC in January 1971. In November 1981, he was promoted to Clinical Professor. At USC he collaboratively developed orthodontic practices that are still taught at USC and throughout the world. He was a respected educator and friend of the global orthodontic community, particularly in Europe and Asia where he traveled and taught extensively. Dr. Sagehorn is survived by his wife, Jane Began Sagehorn of Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was formerly married to Alberta Sagehorn (Burson) and Lucille Squire Sagehorn (deceased). Members of the family include his sister, Marjorie McKee of Sacramento and brother, Dr. Henry "Hank" Sagehorn, D.D.S. of Indio, CA. Children include Steven Sagehorn (deceased), of Chino Hills, Robert Sagehorn, of Long Beach, Thomas Sagehorn of Barrington, IL and John Sagehorn of Long Beach. His stepchildren include Richard Squire, of Los Angeles, Alison Squire Morten of Upland, CA as well as Anne Weiler of Alexandria, VA, Dr. Michael Began, M.D. of Camarillo, CA, Martha Crawford of Singapore and Lora Louise Broady of Denver, as well as 8 grandchildren and 12 step grandchildren and 4 great grand-children. A memorial will be held on March 25, 2012 in Long Beach, California. Gifts to the Ostrow School of Dentistry are being accepted on behalf of Dr. Sagehorn's family and will be directed to the Department of Orthodontics. Dr. Sagehorn had a memorable impact on my life. Not only did he give me a beautiful smile, but he made me feel good about myself in those awkward teenage years. I have never forgotten him. My most heartfelt condolences to his family.
