Twila Vivian
Linthicum Sutherlin

Surrounded by her loving family, Twila departed this life peacefully to be with Jesus Christ, her personal Lord and Savior on February 19, 2013. She was born in Afton, Iowa on February 12, 1933, the daughter of Lottie and Harold Linthicum. She is survived by her husband, Benjamin T. Sutherlin, of Los Alamitos, California; two daughters and one son, six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; daughter; Kimberly Ann Sutherlin Watts and son-in-law, David Watts of Queensland, Australia; granddaughter, Kelly Claire Kazmirowicz, husband, Konrad and Twila's great-granddaughter, Vivienne Ella Kazmirowicz of Darwin, Australia, and granddaughter, Catherine Ruth McNamara of Wollongong, Australia; daughter, Kelly Lee Sutherlin McLeod, son-in-law, Steven McLeod, grandson, Cameron Sutherlin McLeod, granddaughter, Claire Sutherlin McLeod of Long Beach, California and Kate Sutherlin McLeod attending Adelphi University in New York City; son, Thomas Jeffrey (TJ) Sutherlin, daughter-in-law, Randi and grandson, Noah Benjamin Sutherlin of Seal Beach, California. Twila graduated from Osceola Iowa High School in 1951, where she was homecoming queen her senior year. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing for many occasions. She later graduated from Northwestern Institute of Medical Technology as Laboratory and x-ray technician. She was employed by the Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield Iowa until she and Ben Sutherlin of Fairfield were married in 1954. Ben was an active duty naval aviator and Twila devoted her life to supporting him and their family during Ben's naval career from marriage through retirement, and for the rest of her life. Twila served as an extraordinary Navy and diplomatic wife, during Ben's eighteen career naval and diplomatic postings, while selflessly raising three children during the active duty period. Unwavering love and concern for family and friends remained Twila's daily focus throughout her lifetime. She was an active member of Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church in Los Alamitos, California for 28 years, where she served as mentor for "Apples of Gold", Stephens Minister, and member of the Care Shepherding Team, bible studies, covenant groups and prayer chain teams. Twila touched the lives of all who met her, offering friendship and compassion with her ever-present beautiful smile, and the sparkle in her eyes. She was truly inspired by her love, life and teaching of Jesus Christ, and her devoted love for her husband and all of her family. Twila's strong faith was a constant source of inspiration to all. A private memorial was held at Twila's bedside and a public memorial to celebrate Twila's life is pending. In lieu of flowers, a "Twila Sutherlin Memorial Fund" was established at Good Shepherd Church. Donations may be made in Twila's name, to Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, 11600 Los Alamitos Blvd., Los Alamitos, CA 90720. Please sign the guestbook at
